2015 - wee Nip Medal Competition - Round 3

18th April 2015
report Peter Shepherd

Abington Park MYC was the setting for the third round of the Wee Nip Medal competition, we were greeted with a fresh offshore wind which was swing round to produce some interesting conditions for the fifteen skippers who braved the city centre conditions
Picture
I must say that all the boats were beautifully turned out and looked a treat on the water, with no retirements due to equipment failures it would seem that everyone now has their boats in top condition.
Consequently the racing was very close with only a couple of skippers managing to get clear of the fleet to record wins.
With the performance and skill levels being so close it is necessary to keep going and try to make ground in every race to get a good result. The racing within the fleet is a real challenge.

Peter Jackson (30, Red Rooster) took two early wins however he wasn't able to keep this early form going and fell back into the mid fleet competition as the day progressed,John Simmons (71, Dimple) spent the rest of the day putting together a series of top two places punctuated by just two races where he had slightly lower scores. Paul Risdale (53, Pig's Nose) had a similar experience and was also on the pace and with a couple of races going the opposite way could have take the win. Geoff Raygada (57, Black Prince) was always there or thereabouts without managing to score a race victory, his consistency was rewarded with third place overall. Another always in the hunt skipper was Alan Smedley (77, Glengoyne) however a couple too many scores outside the sharp end meant his overall score was affected.

Picture
It was all very close in the mid fleet with Trevor Thomas (58, Glendower) and Peter Shepherd (65, Sheep Dip) popping up to record race wins which were the exception rather than the norm.
Slightly further back there were signs of improvement from Dave Alexander (98, McDavid), Tim Leese (93, Arran) and new comer this year Derek Lane (16, Bowmore).

It was all very close throughout the fleet and hopefully you will all come back for more at the next event in this series which is 28th May 2015, Abington Park Main Lake.
