wee Nip Medal Competition - Round 5

17th May 2014

Report by Peter Shepherd

The venue for this months Abington Park Wee Nip Medal Challenge round had to be changed to Daventry Country Park, nine skippers took up the challenge making an interesting fleet.

John Simmons had finished his Wee Nip 17, Pinch and fortunately for me Geoff Raygada had a new boat to sail No3 Black Bush. I say fortunately as upon arriving at the water I discovered a case of the five P's and was unable to sail Sheep Dip as it has battery/servo/receiver* problems. This meant I was able to sail Geoffs original Wee Nip Stag's Breath 39.

Peter Jackson was once again a dab hand at setting the markers for the course which meant we had a starting gate near to the bank, and finding a spot on the gate where it was advantageous was all important with most skippers opting for the starboard end but starting on port, later in the day it was possible to make the port end pay but few skippers were brave enough to try it.

Once through the start an upwind leg took us out into the stronger winds and then depending on the fickle wind direction, what was more usually a beat than a broad reach to turn once again for the downwind leg in front of the launch area, a port turn and back to the furthest mark, where you could finally turn for home and the run for the line. The skippers who negotiated the start and the fourth leg the best were those that came out top. Interestingly one of the features of sailing on Daventry reservoir seems to be finding the wind as the surrounding trees and landscape means there are avenues of wind across any given course and the wise skipper seeks these out to make ground over his opponents.

It was a very pleasant days sailing, with Paul Risdale coming out on top over myself whose string of one second and four firsts in the last five places just saw me overhaul Peter Jackson whose early consistency began to fade. The two new boats of John Simmons & Geoff Raygada finished fourth and fifth respectively with Geoff sailing very well to record a win in race 4, it must be all the practice.

It was worth watching where Alan Smedley went with Glengoyne as on more than one occasion he took a different course to gain places over the rest of the fleet.

Tom Steel made a long trip to join us from Grantham and recorded his first race win in the very first race of the day, after that whilst he featured at the front in some more races the odd mistake here and there, something none of us can afford to do with this close racing, meant he didn't feature higher on the scorecard.

Brian Hawkins & Peter Wood once again resumed the battle not to finish up as the supermarket blended this time Brian managed to just stay out of the bottom spot.

The newest recruit to Wee Nip racing Kate Andrew came to collect her parts for her build and ended up borrowing Stag's Breath for races 9, 10 & 11, I am sure with a little more practice under her belt she will be a handy addition to the ranks.

There are two Wee Nip events to tell you about next month, Alan Smedley has very kindly arranged for a Wee Nip open meeting to take place at Emberton Park Sailing Club on 7th June, it would be great if as many Wee Nip skippers as possible were able to attend to support model yacht racing at this fledgling MYA club.......

......and the next Wee Nip Medal Challenge takes place on 14th June at Two Islands.
