wee Nip Medal Competition - Round 6

14th June 2014

Report by Peter Shepherd

Had I read last months report which incidentally I wrote! I would have seen that I had a problem, with Sheep Dip then and maybe I should have done something about it, as it was I lucked in as Paul Risdale had his superb Pinwinnie just waiting for me to take up the reins.

Fifteen Wee Nippers joined in the fun with the wind direction and strength being just about perfect across Furzton Lake. With so many skippers in attendance it was decided that we should run 18 races with each skipper sitting out for two races to officiate, a system which work very well.

A couple of squally showers upset what was otherwise a perfect day for racing, this caused most of the skippers who had come ill prepared, assuming the recent good weather would continue, to improvise some form of cover for themselves and equipment.
In the morning the course had a very definite Port bias at the start gate, however a number of skippers decided to act as clearing out boats occasionally starting on Starboard leading to a number of incidents at the start.

In the afternoon session the start was reset and with the freshening wind the starboard end was favoured by all but the very brave the course, which was a upwind first leg a long downwind run, across the course on a reach to a corner of the lake in the left hand bay not often visited, back upwind to round the first mark to port, back to where we had just come from and across the finish line.

Two Islands Skippers Keith Coxon (55, Glen Keith) & John Simmons (17, Pinch) were the class of the Fleet and they were joined in battle by Abington Park's Peter Shepherd (54, Pinwinnie). These three mopped up most of the wins and there was some great close racing between them, however there were a couple of notable exceptions when the upcoming Keith Jackson (28, Black Cock) took the first and twelfth races, where he nipped in ahead of Keith Coxon on the line, who after a being fouled by Mike Ewart just before the line was given redress.

In amongst the fleet it was all very close as well Mike Ewart (63, Ardmore), Trevor Thomas (58, Glendower) and Paul Risdale (53, Pig's Nose) all not only competing between themselves but occasionally adding to the mix amongst the top 3. Further back the field is dominated by skippers with less experience a notable performance once again coming from Tom Steel (86, Cutty Sark) who travelled down from Boston.

Mike Ewart deserves a mention for his unfailing efforts towards ensuring we all had the opportunity for an excellent days racing, commiserations must go to Peter Jackson whose Red Rooster suffered the same servo issue that has befallen Sheep Dip, needless to say we will back, new servo's fitted stronger than ever!

The next Wee Nip Medal race will take place at Abington Park, Northampton on 12th July, I am looking forward to it already!

Winner Keith Coxon (Glen Keith 55)
Runner Up John Simmons (Pinch 17)
Third Peter Shepherd (Pinwinnie 54)
