wee Nip Medal Competition - Round 7

12th July 2014

Report by Peter Shepherd

Thirteen of us for this the July edition of the  Wee Nip Medal competition, apologies were received from three skippers, one with a family event, another with car troubles and Norman Hardy who was unfortunately unable to attend due to a chest infection, we wish him a speedy recovery.

The day didn't look to promising to start with as we arrived to a misty lake with little wind, however the sun soon broke through and the thirteen skippers assembled in good time to have their boats checked and measured.

We decided to run the event with three skippers sitting out each race to officiate, with the running scores calculated after each four races so that we can place the individuals who are racing each other to sit out together. With five rounds of four races it meant each skipper completed 15 races and so there were only two discards.

Keith Coxon 55, Glen Keith started off as he meant to go on with two wins and a second from the first three races, keeping his scoring up until a slight blip in the fourth round, only to come back with three emphatic wins in the last session.
Two Islands skippers John Simmons, 17 Pinch and Paul Risdale, 53 Pig's Nose traded places with each other throughout the day until John just managed to nick it when Paul had a couple of poor races towards the end.

Early on these two were joined by Keith Jackson, 28 Black Cock however as his challenge faded Mike Ewart, 63 Ardmore took his place. In the end he was cock-a-hoop just to mange to finish ahead of another fowl skipper Peter Jackson, 30 with Red Rooster.

The new servo in Sheep Dip 65 worked unfortunately I really need to buckle down and make some new sails, however I still managed to have a pleasant day battling race by race with Alan Smedley, 77 Glengoyne, managing to finish ahead of him by two points and Richard Smith, 37 Craggenmore who somehow managed to finish just one point behind us although more often than not he seemed to be going better than me and occasionally was challenging for top honours as well.

Richard Doleman 48, Drambuie, Tom Steel 86, Cutty "contact with the mark" Sark, Paul Strong 02, Knockando and Peter Woods 14, Mortlach, whilst his battery lasted! slugged it out at the back of the pack with some close racing between themselves.

The prizes were awarded at the end of the event with those that were able staying on to see Keith receive his prize and the congratulations of the assembled skippers.

All in all it was a very educational day as there were a number of things we learned today, Chairman of the MYA is it a bit like being the Pope you can call upon a higher authority whenever you need it!

Tom Steels boat isn't really called "contact with the mark!" although you would be excused for thinking so.

Contrary to rumour Sheep Dip will not get re-christened Deep Ship before the next event.

The next Wee Nip Medal race will take place at Two Islands on 9th August, I am looking forward to it already!
